Spring marks the opening of Asheville-area farmers tailgate markets.

The arrival of spring heralds the opening of Western North Carolina’s farmers and tailgate markets. There’s no better place to sample regional specialties, farm-fresh produce and locally produced foods.
The area boasts over 35 markets. Find a complete list of local markets at Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project. You can also get video tips on shopping at markets or find various farm to table restaurants to sample fresh local food.

Asheville City Market is a producer-only market featuring food from local farmers – eggs, produce, meats and fish, brick-oven breads and pastries, handmade pasta, gourmet cheeses, hot sauces, fruit butters and preserves. Mountain herbs, cut flowers and nursery plants are also available. Happens each Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the heart of downtown at 161 South Charlotte Street beginning in spring.

The Black Mountain Tailgate Market blends organic and sustainable produce, plants, flowers and herbs with local artisans’ offerings of pottery, jewelry and handmade soaps. The market is open every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon at 500 Montreat Road in Black Mountain and is a community event. The market runs from Mother’s Day until Halloween.

French Broad Food Co-op Saturday Tailgate Market is Asheville’s original, all-organic tailgate market, operating each Saturday morning since 1990. The market features freshly picked organic vegetables, fruits and herbs as well as local honey, wood-fired brick oven breads, vegan and non-vegan baked treats, eggs, pies, goat cheeses and locally raised meats. The market is located at 76 Biltmore Avenue, next to the French Broad Food Co-op.

Opening in the spring, the market operates every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
