We will move from habitat to habitat, looking at butterfly diversity from place to place. We will concentrate on field identification; although I will have a net with me should we need it. We will also be in sunny locales throughout the day, so please dress accordingly. Butterfly watching has increased rapidly over the last few years as many people have started getting interested in butterflies, butterfly gardening and planting/establishing gardens for all types of wildlife. The Carolina Butterfly Society is based in Greensboro, NC and to quote their web site, "The Carolina Butterfly Society emphasizes identifying and watching butterflies in the field and garden rather than collecting them. Every season we organize several butterflying field trips to the various biogeographic regions of the Carolinas. We offer advice on butterfly gardening, encourage photography and record-keeping, provide fact sheets for outdoor educators, sponsor gardening workshops, and collect data for conservation use." On this Venture - an introduction into the world of butterflies, we will study their life cycle from egg to adult, look at butterfly gardening and the wide range of species that are found in western North Carolina. Whether you no very little or even a bit about butterflies, join us for a day out enjoying the Lepidoptera of WNC. http://www.exploreasheville.com/event-calendar/event-details/index.aspx?eid=1972Jul 26, 2008: An Appalachain Evening featuring The Freight Hoppers http://www.exploreasheville.com/event-calendar/event-details/index.aspx?eid=1742An Appalachian Evening, the summer concert series, offers an ever-changing schedule of bluegrass, folk and old-time mountain music by award-winning artists. Footage of actual hurricanes will swirl around the dancers adding to the atmosphere of a storm, with recorded music by Godspeed You Black Emperor!, projections by G. Craig Hobbs, and costumes by Ashevilles premiere fashion designer R. Brooke Priddy. The remainder of the August program features a variety of works that explore the way man views both nature and technology. Salvatore Aiellos Afternoon of a Faun portrays the mythological faun; a curious, mischievous half man, half beast that at one time embodied mans wonder at the mysteries of nature. Two-time Grammy Nominee Taylor Eigsti, 22-year-old pianist/composer/band leader, has been on the jazz scene since he was a pre-teen. His debut on Concord Records, LUCKY TO BE ME, has afforded him the full-fledged exposure he deserves.Tapped by instructor Gary Burton to join and record with his band while a student at Berklee School of Music, Julian has developed a distinctive stylistic depth that belies his youth. When George Vanderbilt invited his first guests to Biltmore House in December 1895, he established legendary hospitality, including serving culinary delights grown right on the estate. From the beginning, it was his vision for Biltmore to be self-sustaining, creating a farm to provide hundreds of varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables, a dairy to supply milk, cream, butter and ice cream, and an apiary to produce honey. Today, Biltmore has an extensive culinary operation featuring five restaurants, vegetable and herb gardens that supply these restaurants, a free-range beef program, a 94-acre vineyard for wine production and the nations most visited winery. Festival guests can tour the estate and experience culinary demonstrations, wine barrel tastings, how-to instructional seminars, estate-inspired menus and entertainment. http://www.exploreasheville.com/event-calendar/event-details/index.aspx?eid=2010Sep 19, 2008 - Sep 21, 2008: Railfest 2008http://www.exploreasheville.com/event-calendar/event-details/index.aspx?eid=1854Three days of railroad fun!
