Day 1 - Lift a whisk, not weights

Build your culinary skills and your arm muscles in one of the many area cooking classes. Discover traditional Appalachian cuisine in Barbara Swell’s Log Cabin Cooking Class or try a class with European flair at Amici Trattoria or with Chef John Wilson at The Sweet Biscuit Inn. (Class schedules vary, so book ahead!) Besides, three hours of sautéing, chopping, and blending burns calories too!

Day 2 – Satisfy your senses and your heart

Spend a Saturday morning perusing local produce, meats and eggs at the North Asheville Tailgate Market, the area’s oldest tailgate market. Grab a loaf of whole grain bread, some goat cheese from Spinning Spider Creamery, and a pint of strawberries and you’ve got a delicious lunch.

Walk for wine

After wandering the Biltmore Estate grounds, head over to the Biltmore Winery. Begin at the vineyards of America's most visited winery. Stroll through the Scholars Walk, where you can learn about the science of winemaking, and then to the production area for a close up look at how wines are aged and bottled. Finish at the tasting room for your reward - a sampling of Biltmore wines.

Day 3 - Not-so-fat farm

Western North Carolina has thousands of farms, and within 60 miles of Asheville you will find everything from dairy farms to orchards to trout farms. Experience farm work and burn calories by picking your own seasonal fruits and vegetables at Beans ‘n Berries. This farm, which is also wheelchair friendly, is open for tours year round. Just call first to let them know you are coming. Eat some of your pickings while you are there and pack some in a cooler to bring home.
