Culinary Pioneer Herve This

The internationally celebrated author of Kitchen Mysteries and Molecular Gastronomy, Herve This, comes to Malaprop’s to discuss his books and his groundbreaking culinary discoveries. This, a member of the Institut de la Recherche Agronomique in Paris, is one of the founders of molecular gastronomy, the study of the physics and chemistry behind everyday cooking. His work has influenced professional and amateur chefs all over the world. This’ research makes cooking more interesting and accessible to all levels, and explains how to adapt difficult recipes to the situation at hand and shows that a greater knowledge of kitchen chemistry allows for greater creativity and experimentation.

Backyard Sustainability Workshop

This is an intro workshop to the tricks of the trade of urban homesteading. Learn what it takes to get yourself set up with: chickens, shitake mushroom production, honey bees, growing red worms, bats and bat poop, trout ponds, greywater, rain catchment and more. Our instructor, Shawn Jadrnicek, is a genius when it comes to integrated home and yard design. He'll guide you, step-by-step, on how he set up the new systems at AVI over the past several months so that you can see it all in action. This workshop will empower you to do it in your own backyard!

Wild Food & Fermentation Workshop

Come participate in a cultural revolution! Wild fermentation is a way of incorporating the wild into your body, becoming one with the natural world. Wild foods possess a great, unmediated life force which can help us adapt to shifting conditions and lower our susceptibility to disease. Microorganisms are everywhere, and the techniques for fermenting with them are simple and flexible. In this workshop, we will spend time walking outdoors, getting to know local plants, harvesting edibles and medicinals, and together we will make sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, herbal elixir meads, miso and much more. You will leave with your own bubbling ferments.

Brewgrass Festival

Each year in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we gather over 30 American breweries to showcase more than 100 different beers. We add a great lineup of national and regional bluegrass musicians. We also feature a variety of area food vendors and plenty of water. Put all these things together and you have the ingredients for the perfect beer day.

Legendary Gingerbread Tour 2009

A progressive tour open to the public with transportation provided by Gray Line Tolley. Four Asheville Legendary Inns (Albemarle, Abbington Green, Cumberland Falls and the Inn on Montford) will display artisan-designed gingerbread houses representing scenes from "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Tours are available on Saturday only beginning November 7th and ending on Saturday, January 2, 2010. The first tour will begin at 5:00 and take approximately 21/2 hours.The cost is $30.00 per person with transportation included.
