"ECO-ART: Artists Respond-Reclaim, Reuse, Recreate" opens May 8th at Hand in Hand Gallery
On Friday, May 8, Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock will open an exhibition entitled “ECO-ART: Artists Respond – Reclaim, Reuse, Recreate.” An opening reception will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The show will run through Sunday, July 5. Hand in Hand Gallery is pleased to be partnering with Environmental and Conservation Organization of Henderson County (ECO) for this event in an effort to raise awareness and funds for their local efforts. This “green” art exhibition will explore the artist’s response to the world and times in which we live. As creative alchemists, they work daily to transform materials and elements into something beautiful, useful and meaningful. Few artists still mine ore as the first step in forming a gold pendant, dig a riverbank of clay for a pottery mug, or harvest trees for a rocking chair. However, every artist develops sources for their material needs and the inspiration for their creations within the context of their own world. An increased awareness of our impact on the limited resources of our earth home redefine our daily lives, so too, it must affect our creativity. Artists have been invited who: Recycle, reclaim and reuse materials, ideas, imagery, parts, techniques Reduce their energy needs required for their art, or their use of highly refined or toxic materials Recreate the spirit of alchemy, transforming available materials Revitalize outdated artwork and concepts with a fresh approach Over 50 local and regional artists working in most mediums will be represented.

Tradition/Innovation: American Masterpieces of Southern Craft & Traditional Art
Tradition/Innovation: American Masterpieces of Southern Craft & Traditional Art, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, is intended to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy. “Through this exhibit and the online and educational materials that we’ll present, we want to introduce people in the South to master artists and craftspeople living and working in their own communities,” said Gerri Combs, Executive Director of the Southern Arts Federation. “The incredible diversity of these individuals and the objects they create will give people a new window into the traditions of the South’s many cultural communities and the vibrant contemporary craft movement in the region.” Among the artists in the exhibit are six recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship, the country’s highest honor for traditional artists. The combination of contemporary craft and traditional art in this exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to explore the "threads" between two different approaches to creating artwork, and also to compare the approaches of traditional and contemporary artists.

"I Wrote This Play To Make You Love Me"
Anne Thibault wrote and stars in this heart-breaking and hilariously risqué one-woman play about motherlessness and promiscuity. Marginally successful actress Lysette is possibly pregnant by her married boyfriend and stuck in rural Vermont rehearsing a production of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. While trying to pick up the pieces of her remaining family, Lynnette wrestles with the memories of the mother who abandoned her. The Asheville Citizen-Times calls Anne Thibault “faultless” and “impressive” (The Syringa Tree, 2005). “Superb acting…an outstanding performance from Anne Thibault” (Proof, 2003). Contains strong language and sexual situations. For adult audiences only.

But despite their reservations, these two women find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other, becoming the best of friends, and (who knows?) perhaps something more. Jenny Lewis plus Heartless Bastards
They say there are two sides to every story, but that old saying might not quite cover it if we're talking about Jenny Lewis. Over the decade she's showed us maybe four or five, depending on where you're standing. With Rilo Kiley, her rock band of the past 10 years, she transformed before our eyes from a shy indie-rocker singing barely above a whisper to the authoritative, take-no-prisoners singer/songwriter/frontwoman we know today. Tack sharp and unafraid of subject matter of any height or weight, channeling songs through either Rilo Kiley or her solo work, her staggering range as a writer has brought her critical acclaim around the globe.

How the Universe Works: Transcendental Meditation Introductory Talk
Is there order in the universe? What is the potential of the human mind? Can a person live free from stress and suffering? If so, how? What does science really say about the benefits of meditation? What is enlightenment? Are all meditation practices the same? How do I know if I'm meditating correctly and making sufficient progress? What does science say about meditation and the brain? We do live in an orderly universe. The mind is not only part of that immense complexity, but it can comprehend it. The result is human knowledge. As the mind's untapped potential is developed—and this is the role of meditation, when properly practiced—it is more and more capable not only of fully knowing itself, and therefore the universe and one's place in it, but also of spontaneous "right thinking," which spontaneously promotes actions in harmony with the vast system of laws that govern life and the cosmos, thereby reducing mistakes that lead to problems and suffering. Come learn about the immense potential of your own mind—and how to unfold it. Speakers: Tom and Jeanne Ball, 35-year meditation teachers trained by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. TIME: 7:15 PM every Wednesday LOCATION: Asheville TM Center, 165 East Chestnut Street DIRECTIONS & More info: See www.MeditationAsheville.org OFFICIAL WEBSITE: www.TM.org The beneficial effects of the Transcendental Meditation program have been verified by over 600 scientific research studies conducted at over 250 independent universities and research institutions worldwide — such as Yale Medical School, Harvard Medical School, Stanford and UCLA — and published in over 350 peer-reviewed scientific journals. The National Institutes of Health has granted over $24 million for scientists to study the effects of the Transcendental Meditation program on brain function and cardiovascular health.

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers plus Chuck Meade of BR-549
Known for blazing innovative trails with the release of several past projects, the white-hot foursome known as Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers is at it again with the web-only release of Glow In The Dark, a spectacularly sparkling live recording taped at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, New Jersey in 2008. The project concept debuted February 2, 2009, and continues for 14 weeks at the band’s website – www.azpeacemakers.com, where fans can hear and watch an entire live show that captures the true spirit and vigor of RCPM. A new song (audio and video) debuts each of the 14 weeks. With the conception of its first ever “VivaCast”, the non-conformist rock-and-rollers successfully pioneered a revolutionary new way to create music and put their fans directly in the recording engineer's seat with a voyeur view. The stunning result is captured on Turbo Ocho, the CD/DVD released in March 2008, which chronicles the amazing creative process of producing 8 new songs in 8 days. Each song was written, arranged and recorded in a day and upon completion, instantly uploaded to the internet, along with the accompanying day’s video log, for thousands of fans to hear and view.

Hank III & Assjack plus Lucky Tubb
In an era of plastic, manufactured music, it is always refreshing when someone goes against the grain and does what they want to do. Hank Williams III is the best example of this in music today. For over twelve years now Shelton Hank Williams III has been fighting the music industry to be his own man. Cast by certain people in the shadow of his legendary grandfather, Williams has fought long and hard to create his own sound and style, and to preserve the true outlaw spirit of real country music. His ever-evolving three hour live shows pay respects to both his country roots, and the punk and metal influences that he has held true to since his teens. Much like his grandfather and his father before him, Hank III is his own man. He doesn't care what expectations people have in him, and he will do it the way that he does it so long as he is alive. Hank III's last release, Straight to Hell, was considered a milestone as it was his first have a parental advisory control sticker on it. Williams says with pride. "I was born and raised in the Bible belt; they take everything a little bit too serious." Straight to Hell broke all the rules of country music while somehow managing to honor its traditions at the same time. This two-CD celebration of drinking too much, staying up too late and getting into all kinds of nefarious mischief brought a yee-haw from those intrepid souls who have followed the exploits of this third-generation hell-raiser. The surprise is that Williams concocted his two-CD opus on a Korg D-1600 digital recorder — a $400 piece of hardware that liberated the artist from temporal and budget constraints. The saga continues on October 21, when Curb will release William's long awaited fourth studio project, Damn Right Rebel Proud: a collection of thirteen original cuts penned by Williams -- guaranteed to please diehards and new recruits alike.

Todd Snider plus Cletus Got Shot
Keith Richards said humor was rock and roll’s greatest weapon, Bob Dylan proved it and Todd Snider takes it to heart. For twelve years, Snider has been a satirist, class cutup and the rare artist who understands and celebrates the connections between the Stones, Dylan, Bill Hicks, John Prine, Mitch Hedberg, Kris Kristofferson, Hunter S. Thompson and Randy Newman. Snider’s records are fun even when they aren’t being funny, funny even when they’re sad, and no less truthful for the laughs. Which brings us to The Devil You Know, a sparkling, smiling, snarling portrait of the doomed. “I was angry because I had no shoes ‘til I saw a man who had no feet. Now I’m really pissed off,” he explained. “If you’re going to accept your fate, you might have to accept fate as your enemy.” Things don’t end well, you know. But Snider has a unique way of sidling up to a topic, spinning a yarn, making you chuckle amidst all the sinister stuff going down. There’s an edge to what he’s done over seven albums, and this eighth album hones that edge. It’s not any more a concept album than many others – all albums come from concepts – but it’s as direct an attack as this master of the odd, oblique angle has ever waged.

Chimaira plus Winds Of Plague, Born Of Osiris & Thy Will Be Done
Formed in 1998, the Cleveland, OH-based hardcore sextet Chimaira consists of singer/screamer Mark Hunter, guitarists Matt DeVries (who replaced Jason Hager in mid-2001) and Rob Arnold, bassist Jim LaMarca, drummer Andols Herrick, and electronic specialist Chris Spicuzza. The band's mixture of hardcore, metal, and electronics proved to be a big hit back home, as they sold 10,000 copies of their independently issued debut EP, This Present Darkness, leading to an appearance on the now-defunct USA Network TV show Farmclub. The band opened for the likes of Soulfly, Hatebreed, Spineshank, and Snapcase and was eventually signed to Roadrunner Records, issuing their 14-track debut full-length, Pass Out of Existence, in August 2001. The Impossibility of Reason followed on Roadrunner in May 2003, and Chimaira supported the effort with extensive touring, including dates with In Flames and appearances at Ozzfest 2003. After the release of the DVD collection The Dehumanization Process and addition of new drummer Kevin Talley (ex-Misery Index) in 2004, the band unleashed their third album, Chimaira, in 2005. Though a strong record, internal problems and ones with their label threatened to tear the band apart in the months following its release. They soldiered through it all, however, and by fall 2006 Chimaira had moved on from Roadrunner, inked a new deal over at Ferret, and began work on new material. Earlier that year, the band also welcomed back original drummer Andols Herrick. More of a team writing effort than their last album, the resulting Resurrection appeared in early March 2007 courtesy of a rejuvenated band, and Chimaira supported its release on the road with Killswitch Engage and Dragonforce.

Saving Abel
On their self-titled Virgin Records debut, Saving Abel boast a cool, alt-rock, Southern-tinged sound that’s instantly familiar and irresistible. With songs ranging from the intense rocker “New Tattoo” to the sexy groove of the first single, “Addicted,” the quintet from Corinth, Mississippi are radio-ready. Singer Jared Weeks and guitarist Jason Null met in late 2004, and by 2005 were recording acoustic demos with producer Skidd Mills (12 Stones, Saliva, Submersed). Saving Abel then moved into a more rock/electric direction with a full band lineup, while “Addicted” garnered local radio support that led to a 2007 deal with Virgin and the 2008 release of Saving Abel. With influences including Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Seattle sound, Johnny Cash, and AC/DC’s Angus Young, Null explains that Saving Abel has been “compared to the Black Crowes, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, even Incubus--everyone seems to hear what they want in us. We’re just trying to connect with people.” Adds Weeks: “And we’re going to keep doing what we do until they don’t want to hear it no more!”

Come participate in a cultural revolution! Wild fermentation is a way of incorporating the wild into your body, becoming one with the natural world. Wild foods possess a great, unmediated life force which can help us adapt to shifting conditions and lower our susceptibility to disease. Microorganisms are everywhere, and the techniques for fermenting with them are simple and flexible. In this workshop, we will spend time walking outdoors, getting to know local plants, harvesting edibles and medicinals, and together we will make sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, herbal elixir meads, miso and much more. You will leave with your own bubbling ferments.

Xavier Rudd plus Jeremy Fisher
Maybe more than any of his previous albums, Xavier Rudd’s Dark Shades of Blue is a balance of darkness and light. That’s what the Australian singer-songwriter/one-man band/didgeridoo virtuoso hears in the disc. Plenty of each went into making the disc. Dark Shades of Blue is the first Rudd album in several years to be recorded in Australia. As a result, it bears the joy and peace of mind that comes with an often-touring artist that gets a chance to catch his breath. Recorded in Byron Bay on Australia’s eastern coast, it found the 30-year-old Rudd cutting tracks in the evening, before going to sleep under the stars, staring up at the Southern Cross and the Milky Way, his retriever curled up by his side. “Even though it’s a darker album,” says Rudd. “I think there is a lot of sunshine in the record. There’s brightness in the instruments, tonally, and I can hear the humidity in the didgeridoos, and in the guitar. I can hear that humidity, the warmth of the climate in Byron Bay.”

Perpetual Groove
Perpetual Groove has become a rock band. That's the impression fans got when they heard one of the rock & roll tracks from Perpetual Groove's new album, LIVELOVEDIE at the band's sold out New Year's Eve performance. LIVELOVEDIE was produced by Grammy winner Robert Hannon (Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) and Perpetual Groove. The album was produced with renewable energy through Perpetual Groove's partnership with Tree Sound Studios, Sustainable Waves, and Green Mountain Energy Company and is being released by the environmentally progressive label, Tree Leaf Music. A celebrated, international touring act for over four years, Perpetual Groove has built a reputation on intense, emotional music that fans call "trance arena rock," and won over legions of fans with their experimentations in live 5.1 concert surround sound, an intense retina blinding light show, and a willingness to keep the connection strong between band and fans. The Athens, GA-based band's riveting live performances have catapulted them into the "must-see" category of live rock bands. With a funky blend of jazz-rock, neo-psychedelia, R&B, trance electronica, progressive rock and anthemic arena rock, the Bonnaroo veterans have conquered the festival circuit and continue to tour relentlessly.

Corey Smith plus American Aquarium
Corey Smith's incredibly energetic live show, combined with clever, well-crafted lyrics and soulful Southern voice has earned him an enthusiastic legion of fans. Smith says, “It really starts with a song. We haven’t created some magical formula. It’s just about writing songs that, for one reason or another, connect with people and impact their lives”. “I think it’s a little of everything,” says Smith in describing his innovative style. “We don’t live in cultural bubbles anymore. We’re all exposed to many different types of music through TV, radio, and now especially the internet. I like to think my songs reflect the variety of musical styles that have impacted my life in Georgia. Gospel, country, blues, rock, hip-hop – strands of all these are there.”

20 Years High and Rising Tour: De La Soul
At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. Though their style initially earned both critical raves and strong sales, De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the '90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap. In 2009, De La Soul and Nike released "Are You In?": Nike Original Run. The recording is a single-track recording at 44 minutes, 17 seconds and was made available, exclusively, through iTunes. When describing their new material, group member Posdnous said “We always think things through and put quality into anything we do ’ we never look to just take the cheque and run."

John Brown's Body & Dubconscious plus Passafire
When John Brown’s Body released their fourth studio album in 2005, the band looked forward to the happy grind of touring to support the release. With Pressure Points hailed by critics as “their strongest, most consistent effort to date,” [Popmatters] JBB set out on tour and continued their efforts to conquer the world. Little did they know that they were about to go through a series of events that would significantly change the band. They endured the death of bassist Scott Palmer, the departure of several long time members (including singer and co-founder Kevin Kinsella), and throat surgery for lead singer Elliot Martin—enough challenges to end the career of many groups. Instead, JBB emerged with a brand new line-up and a fearlessness born out of this musical near-death experience.

Doug Stanhope
Doug Stanhope is a stand-up comic. Has been since 1990. His material ranges from true-life graphic perversion to volatile social criticism. Doug is vulgar, opinionated, brutally honest and shockingly uninhibited and is certainly not for everybody. He started his career in Las Vegas doing jack-off jokes for free drinks. Not much has changed, save for the mullet. Doug has built a wide-ranging television resume of dubious achievement. He hosted The Man Show on Comedy Central as well as the ubiquitous pseudo-porn for the sexually crippled, "Girls Gone Wild", both solely and shamelessly for financial gain. He has appeared on "The Howard Stern Show", "Comedy Central Presents", "Premium Blend", NBC's "Late Friday", "Spy TV" BBC's "Floor Show Live" while on ecstasy and wrote, produced and starred in Fox's "Invasion of the Hidden Cameras" and has even popped up on "Fox News with Greta Van Sustern" and "The Jerry Springer Show". But none of it compares to seeing him live. He’s appeared at major comedy festivals including the Montreal Just For Laughs, Aspen US Comedy Arts, Chicago Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, where he won the Strathmore Press Award in 2002. Also in 2002, he was named as one of the Top Ten Comics To Watch by both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. He has released three CDs and three DVDs including the latest through Showtime, "No Refunds" in 2008.

Adrian Belew Power Trio
A wizard of sonic manipulation and texture, Adrian Belew has been the guitarist of choice for the art-rock crowd, playing with Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and Nine Inch Nails. He has also fronted a version of King Crimson and sustained a lower-profile career as a solo artist. Throughout the ’90s and into the new century, Belew continued his guitar explorations, either acoustically or, more typically, employing a full range of techno-heavy effects - an approach best summed up by the title of his 1997 release The Guitar as Orchestra.

The Wallflowers
As part of the mid-'90s revival of roots-rock, the Wallflowers held a special connection to one of the original inspirations: vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Jakob Dylan. Though he is the son of a legend, Jakob's similarities to his father are occasional -- in fact, the Wallflowers are more influenced by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers than original '60s folk-rock, though lyrically, Jakob remains a close companion to the original Dylan. Bringing Down the Horse was a big seller throughout 1997, thanks to "6th Avenue Heartache," "One Headlight," and "The Difference," the third single pulled from the record. Early in 1998, "One Headlight" won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal. Settling down from the rush of success, the Wallflowers rightfully took a long four-year break from recording. The new millennium sparked new creativity, and the Wallflowers returned in October 2000 to release the excellent Breach. The album went largely ignored, leading to the more mainstream Red Letter Days the following year. After a two-year hiatus the band returned with Rebel, Sweetheart.

Medeski, Martin & Wood
Transcendence, nirvana, enlightenment… the point at which every soul in a given space is focused in on the same vibration and all systems become self-perpetuating. It is a sensation that Medeski Martin &Wood have been chasing over the course of their nearly two-decade career. “In sports, they call it ‘the zone,’” reflects keyboardist John Medeski. “A classical musician can get there by completely immersing themselves in someone else’s music. We get there – and we try to bring the listener there with us – by improvising…” Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood have made improvisation their language – how they communicate with one another and how they communicate with an audience. Their genius for making even the most sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic ideas instantly relatable to their listeners, via long-honed group empathy and individual precision, is balanced by an uncanny knack for imparting the simplest statements with a profound resonance and clarity. In concert they spontaneously shape ideas, each performance marking the start of a journey whose destination is unknown even to them.

Bascom Lamar Lunsford "Minstrel of the Appalachians Festival"
This is an all-day festival celebrating regional music and dance traditions. The event is the second oldest folk festival in Western North Carolina and was named in honor of cofounder Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Lunsford was a musician and folklorist who dedicated his life to collecting and promoting the music of the Southern Appalachians. Through his work he became known as "Minstrel of the Appalachians." The festival, which is now in its 42nd year, brings out the region's finest musicians and dancers. Numerous stages, jam circles, and workshops will occur throughout the day. At night there will be a spectacular concert featuring more than 20 different performances by ballad singers, dancers, and string bands. Join us in honoring the rich cultural traditions of the Southern Appalachians!

Obituary plus Goatwhore, Krisiun, The Berzerker & Warbringer
Upon switching their name from Xecutioner to Obituary, the career of one of the most successful and influential Death Metal bands began. Hailing from Florida and featuring John Tardy (vocals), brother Donald Tardy (drums), Trevor Peres (guitar), Allen West (guitar), and Daniel Tucker (bass), the band signed to Roadracer Records, a now defunct division of Roadrunner, for the recording of their debut album—the immense and immeasurably heavy “Slowly We Rot” (1989). The album was engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio, which would come to be the most sought after facility for production of albums during 1990’s rise of the Death Metal genre. Unlike much death metal preceding it, the album had a sludgy feel and integrated devastatingly slow passages along with obliterating overtures that reached far beyond any point of mayhem that metal had yet to reach; the result was a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike coupling the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. Like them or not, Obituary was unlike anything anyone had heard before.

The Charlatans UK plus Hatcham Social
For many years, the Charlatans UK were perceived as the also-rans of Madchester, the group that didn't capture the zeitgeist like the Stone Roses or the band that failed to match the mad genre-bending of the Happy Mondays. Of course, they were more traditional than either of their peers. Working from a Stonesy foundation, the Charlatans added dance-oriented rhythms and layers of swirling organs straight out of '60s psychedelia. At first, the Charlatans had great promise, and their initial singles -- including "The Only One I Know" -- were hits, but as Madchester and "baggy" faded away, the group began to look like a relic. It was commonly assumed that their third album, 1994's Up to Our Hips, was the end of the line. However, the Charlatans made a remarkable comeback in 1995 with their eponymous fourth album, which found them embracing not only the flourishing Brit-pop movement, but also underground dance and techno, as well as their mainstay of classic rock. The Charlatans UK debuted at number one, and the group was hailed as survivors. Unfortunately, few knew how literal that term was -- as the band was recording its follow-up album in 1996, organist Rob Collins, who had defined the band's sound, died in a car crash. The Charlatans decided to continue as a quartet, and their subsequent album, Tellin' Stories, debuted at number one upon its 1997 release, suggesting that they had become one of the great British journeyman bands of the '90s.

Andrew Bird plus St. Vincent
Forget the violin. Forget the classical background. As troubadour Andrew Bird puts it, “At this point the violin just happens to be the instrument I have on hand to make the sounds that I hear. I like to abuse it and pull as many sounds out of it as I can.” Bird is a masterful and intuitive singer / songwriter, and what he does while performing—alternately plucking and bowing his violin, then immediately sampling the results, layering the sounds with guitar, whistling, glockenspiel and vocals—bears little resemblance to what most people might expect. It’s only one of several devices in his arsenal of instruments, melodies, and imaginative wordplay.

Black Lips plus Turbo Fruits
The Black Lips are what you could call true visionaries of a skeptical age. Even from their very first 7" EP, you could tell they were doing their own thing on their own terms, and of course it didn't sit well, even with the dawning of the 21st century and all it promised. Wildly cross-eyed broken stars destined to waver in their importance in the cosmos, they know no boundaries and they take no pretense. Like a volatile and teetering amalgamation of the Swell Maps trying to cover the Swingin' Medallions, it's just not right for this world. Unless you long for the unhinged freedom that comes with music that challenges everything without becoming an unlistenable mess of sound. It's a dazzling catastrophe that needs to be absorbed before it vaporizes into thin air. The fun these guys have is hard to hide either live or on record. Seriously slurred swashbucklers living out the ultimate teenage dream, yet breaking through another layer of remarkable idiocy, transcribed through hallucinations, exasperation, and perfectly casual dick fumbling.
